Again I travel UK to US to see the best. Show Report: Las Vegas & Anaheim CSN&Y Shows. Graham Baker. Back in 2000 I went off to Chicago to see CSN&Y, on a sudden impulse, arranging the trip in 36 hours ! This time around as soon as the tour was announced last November, a few friends and I decided we would go. We selected the Las Vegas and Anaheim shows, as being within reasonable travelling distance of each other, and allowing us to accept our Californian friend’s offer of accommodation and hospitality in Newport Beach, near Los Angeles. Vinny & I arrived in Las Vegas a couple of days ahead of the other guys, allowing us time to see some of the tourist attractions, including Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. That was a round trip of 591 miles, which we did in a day ! We went even further the next day, 20 million miles actually ! - we went to the Star Trek Experience, which included a visit to the flight deck of SS Enterprise and a ride in a space craft. I’m not a Trekkie, but it was great fun. And so to Friday night; the concert was at the MGM Grand, a large typical arena designed for sport (the Tyson-Lewis fight was scheduled to take place here) and also used for concerts. In the bar before the show, we met up with our fellow Brits and quite a few American CSNY fans at a ‘pre-show gathering’, too many names to recall and list individually, but hi to everyone ! Throughout the tour the concerts had been starting around 8.10 to 8.15 and, sure enough, at 8.15 the lights dimmed ……………….. at last the waiting was over. As the band came up the steps at the side of the stage the applause started to spread like a ripple then, as more people saw them, increased in volume to thunderous applause and cheers. Crosby, Stills, Young and a barefoot Nash; with backing musicians Booker T (of The MGs fame) on keyboards, Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn on bass and Steve ‘Smokey’ Potts on drums. No talking, a couple of waves, on with guitars, and straight into the opening song, Carry On/Questions. Most of the crowd stayed on their feet for most of the first set. I had been deliberately avoiding reading reviews of the concerts so did not know what songs they would be playing. Being a long time Nash fan, the first highlight of the evening for me came with Military Madness. Graham has performed this song, from his first solo album, Songs For Beginners, over the years, unfortunately its message is still valid; but Neil Young’s blistering guitar solo sounded like apocalypse now, giving a new lease of life to it. Next, and probably the, highlight - I Used To Be A King - a long time favourite of mine, also from Songs For Beginners. After an interval came the acoustic set. The highlight of this set, for me, was when Graham (on keyboards) and David (acoustic guitar) sang Graham’s Wind On The Water – and did it superbly. Performed for the first and, so far, only time on the tour. Although the band remain on stage there is a second, short, break while some of the instruments are changed around for the return to electric music. When Neil and Stephen start duetting (duelling?) on guitar solos the sparks fly. The band cracked a few jokes, and Neil was particularly talkative (!); joking about being under instruction from management to finish early so people would get back to the gaming tables and one-arm bandits, and explaining the story behind his song She’s My Girl; about his daughter leaving home to go to college. The full set-list is below. The next day we five Brits drove through the desert to our friend’s home in Newport Beach, California, and to dull weather ! It was warmer back home in the Blighty! After a barbeque at our friend’s house, meeting more American CSNY fans, we went to The Arrowhead Pond Arena in Anaheim, for our second concert in two nights. Another great show. Much less talking from the band, but still a great gig. Pretty much the same songs, but Graham and David did Graham’s Cathedral in place of Wind On The Water. All four of them seem to be really enjoying themselves on tour. Graham particularly is in fine fettle. They were on great form for the whole show but were particularly on fire during the third set. During the third set Graham doesn’t bother competing with Neil & Stephen; a lot of the time he leaves his guitar off and dances around the stage, whacking a tambourine or whatever else he can find to whack, like a sprightly teenager. It’s easy to forget that (a) he’s 60 and (b) he smashed his legs in a boating accident just two years ago. A great show and well worth the hard-earned pennies to go all that way for. The set-list covers their full career(s) from 1969 right up to Neil’s new album; and although not performed the two nights we were there, we got Wind On The Water and Cathedral instead; they have been doing Dirty Little Secret from Graham’s new album. The four piece version of the band are dominated by Neil Young; certainly in the choice of songs, and he does have a stage ‘presence’ or persona; however Stephen Stills does get to lead a quite a few solos. I don’t agree with the opinion expressed by many Neil fans that this is Neil and his backing band. Neil is obviously enjoying himself playing with the other guys, and particularly sparking off Stephen, inspiring some great guitar work from both of them. Graham, David and Stephen are enjoying having Neil in the band, and they readily acknowledge that Neil has written more songs and had more hit albums over the years, so they are happy to reflect that in the set-list. Here’s to the next tour ! Las Vegas
1) Carry On/Questions Set Break
12) Helplessly Hoping Short set break, (The band remain on stage while the instruments are changed around)

Mike
Mettler. Q: The recent CS&N and CSN&Y
tours have been musically quite
interesting, musically speaking. I think a lot of people didn't expect
to hear new arrangements of a lot of your classic material...

Pittsburgh Show
I attended the Pittsburgh show last night. Just like Cleveland, the boys rocked again. This time we got to hear SJBE (totally awesome) and Lee Shore. They didn’t play Down By the River or Long May You Run. The audience in Pittsburgh was more CSN and Neil Young fans unlike Cleveland where I thought there seemed to be more Neil Young fans. Graham told the audience that before the show, Neil reminded all of them that Pittsburgh rocks! Of course that brought cheers from the crowd. There also seem to be more interaction with the audience this time and more stage banter. When they were having cable problems, Neil said Madonna doesn’t have cable problems, how come we do? The guys were relaxed and having fun, especially Stephen who seemed to be really enjoying himself. I thought Neil’s introduction to the song, My Girl was also very touching. He said that he always drives his daughter to school from the time she was in kindergarten through her senior year. He said he missed driving her to school while he’s on tour. It kind of gave the audience a look at Neil’s fatherly side. I love the way Graham sings on this song as well. At one point, a young girl remained standing dancing. Security came over to her and asked her to sit down. She resisted somewhat, but then sat down. After they finished singing, David said, did you see the young girl standing and the guy who asked her to sit down, well ignore him. And I believe Stephen said yes, this is rock and roll. As with all the other shows, Woodstock, RITFW, got the audience on their feet. I think this is the best version of Woodstock I’ve ever heard. The same goes for Graham’s Military Madness. The encore was Teach Your Children and the audience had no problem singing the words. They sounded great and the show was worth every penny. They exuberate so much energy on stage that it’s hard not to get caught up in it. The show started around 8:10 and finished at around 11:30. I think it was a little longer in Cleveland. The highlight for me was getting to go backstage. Jeanne, a fellow Lee-Shorer had sewn a shirt with giraffes on it for Stephen. He loved it, especially with the giraffe motif already in place on stage. He wore it all during the show, much to Jeanne’s delight. He even told the story about calling his wife giraffe because she is taller than him. He said, unlike Tom Cruise, I don’t mind. His road manager gave us backstage passes and Jeanne got to meet her long time idol. While we waited backstage, I saw David walk by with Jan and Django and said hello. He nodded in acknowledgment. A little later, much to my surprise, Graham came around the corner and I yelled his name. He came over to us, said hello and shook my hand. I had met Graham twice before, but obviously he would not have remembered who the hell I was. I told him my name, which seemed to spark a memory and he touched my cheek as if to say he remembered. Thanks, Graham, once again for a memorable moment. And thank you Jeanne, for sewing that shirt and getting us backstage. This was the last show of the tour for me. Thank you David, Stephen, Graham and Neil for all of the beautiful music. You guys really know how to rock! Your Tour of America has certainly brought much needed comfort and joy to all attending. America is truly fortunate to have such talented and caring musicians to lean on in these difficult times. Rock On! Fran Orr
CLEVELAND SHOW The show started around 8:15 and ended close to Midnight. Stephen Stills walked on stage carrying a #1 Cleveland Browns football jersey with the name Stills printed on it. Great way to fire up a Cleveland crowd! Being a football fan myself, I was honored to see Stephen flashing a Browns jersey. I actually thought that the show was better than 2000. They just sounded better and you could tell that they were having fun. Not a lot of stage banter nor interacting with the audience. However, they were always patting each other on the back which was nice to see. One special moment was toward the end of the show when Neil gave Stephen a hug. Very nice moment. Another memorable moment was when Neil asked David Crosby, “Weren’t you in the Wizard of Oz?” David replies in the lion’s voice, “I am the King of the Forest” to which Neil yells “It was you, it was you!” And Graham Nash was dancing around the stage all night. Not bad for a 60 year old! The audience was basically a Neil Young crowd, at least everyone sitting by me. Could have done without the couple in front of me who spilled as much beer as they drank. Also they continued to stand when everyone else would sit down. CSNY opened with CarryOn/Questions. They were a little off key, but it was better than in 2000. I really liked Neil Young’s Going Home and Let’s Roll. Good to hear Graham Nash’s Military Madness and I Used to Be King. Graham dedicated Our House to George Harrison whose birthday it was. Here are some of the other songs that were played, there not in any specific order, just as I remember them:
Eight
Miles High
Encore: The stage had candles on both sides, a palm tree, an Indian and of course, the wall behind the stage had the board with all of the 9/11 victim’s pictures and information. The lights on the board changed with each song, which was very moving. Being that Cleveland is so close to Kent State, the audience kept chanting for Ohio, but they never sang it. This is the first time I’ve seen CSN(Y) in Cleveland and not heard this song. For me, as much as I enjoyed the electric set, the acoustic set was my favorite. This is true CSNY in its’ purest form. It was a great show worth every penny. My advice, see this show while you can, you won’t be disappointed. Pittsburgh here I come! Fran Orr |
