Press Release
CARL WAYNE
SONGS FROM THE WOOD AND BEYOND
1973 - 2003
out via sanctuary 30th January 2006
This CD represents the first ever collection of rare and previously
unreleased collaborative tracks from former Move men, Carl Wayne and
Roy Wood. Containing eight previously unreleased tracks, the
material on the album has been re-mastered by Roy Wood and the
package includes forewords by both musicians.
"What we have here is, I suppose, an odd collection of songs the
bulk of which were written by Roy, the rest by other great writers,
and in the main, recorded many years ago. What is apparent is our
love of our art which we go about with an abundance of soul and
enthusiasm." So said Carl Wayne on this collection of rare and
unreleased tracks unearthed from the vaults of the former men from
The Move. This exploration of just one area of Carl Wayne's diverse
musical career doubles as a celebration of over thirty years of
Wood/Wayne collaborations.
One of the most distinctive and versatile voices in music, Carl
Wayne was the lead singer and front-man of influential and legendary
Birmingham group, The Move, which he founded in 1965 with Roy Wood,
Bev Bevan, Trevor Burton and Ace Kefford. A true musical pioneer,
Carl sung on Flowers In The Rain, the very first record played on
BBC Radio 1 in 1967 and achieved major success with a series of Top
10 hits that included I Can Hear The Grass Grow, Blackberry Way,
Curly, Fire Brigade and Night Of Fear.
Carl Wayne's departure from The Move in 1970 wasn't the end of his
musical relationship with Roy Wood. Their professional association
continued over various projects throughout the 1970s and early
1980s, whenever their busy schedules allowed. Carl also worked
extensively in theatre, television and film and was regarded for
many years as one of the top vocalists in advertising and also
appeared in the hit West End musical Blood Brothers. In 2000 Carl
joined The Hollies and in March 2003 he appeared on the 30th
Anniversary edition of the Electric Light Orchestra's groundbreaking
second album ELO2. Sadly, Carl passed away in 2004 whilst working on
this release, leaving suggestions for Roy on the re-mastering of the
tracks.

Hollies at Darlington
Went to see T'Hollies at Darlington last night, first time I've
seen
the new line up since our Carl passed away. I must say that Peter is an
excellent replacement, his voice is brilliant. I bought the 2 song CD
there also, a cost of £3, new songs are excellent, very commercial.
They sang a few new songs from the forthcoming album 'Staying Power'
everyone sounded the business, can't wait to buy it.
Peter did an excellent version of 'Here I Go Again' he was on stage
alone with just his guitar while the others had a rest. It sent the
hairs on the back of my neck to the heavens.
Peter got some of the words wrong in 'Stop, Stop, Stop.' and 'Long Cool
Woman' with Tony Hicks shaking his head. Both were sung brilliant apart
from that. He also had to restart 'Sandy' because he was having trouble
with his earpieces, just saying 'Well at least you know it's live.'
They are definitely moving forward. You will really enjoy the
2song CD, Peter's vocals are first class. If the songs were promoted,
such as radio airplay they would be a hit.
The group seem really happy with each other on stage. Tony Hicks joking
to Peter Howarth about coming from Blackpool. Ian Parker doing a Roy
Orbison growl to Peter when he said 'Ian can do daft as well as drama',
after he was playing his accordion.
I thought after Carl went it would be The Hollies no more, but Peter's
voice has made a new chapter to The Hollies, it is not the same Hollies
but a new sounding Hollies which could go on to have more hits if it is
handled right. The sound should really appeal to younger listeners, with
the new songs.
All in all everybody went away very happy. Peter has an amazing voice,
can't wait to hear him again next April in Eastbourne.

News from Sheila and Chris Bowen from The Hollies Carousel
"The Hollies new album (scheduled for release in February 2006) is to be titled 'Staying Power'. As a taster to the release of the album, a 2-track CD will be a available for purchase on the autumn tour. The two songs on the CD are 'Shine On Me' written by Mark Read, Rob Hart and Cliff Masterson and 'Hope' written by Rob Davis and Steve Mac. The CD is produced by Ray Stiles and Ian Parker and is a Hollies production."
"Jimmy Smith kindly provided us with a copy this week. What can we say? It's stunning. We can't find enough words to express the feeling of anticipation and the excitement of just holding it, and then the thrill of being able to listen to a CD with songs that are absolutely BRAND NEW!! Peter's lead vocals are without a doubt just brilliant! The new style harmonies are first class and the instrumentation top notch! These two songs are very commercial and more capable of rising above anything that the current music scene has to offer. What is more exciting is that we have heard several of the other tracks for inclusion on the album ( albeit still in various states of completion), all written by well known and respected writers. We believe it will be a truly magnificent album when it goes to press in the New Year."
"After listening to the 2 track CD many, many times, 'Shine On Me' just has the edge, but of course that's our opinion. BUY IT and decide for yourself."
"The 2 track CD can be purchased on tour from the 27th September at £3:00 or direct from Jimmy Smith at a cost of £3:50(including postage and packing). Cheques should be made payable to 'Hollies Limited' and sent to Jimmy Smith, Hill Farm, Hackleton, North Hants. NN7 2DH"
"We are delighted to inform you that the next Hollies convention will be held on Saturday 1st April 2006 in Eastbourne. As with previous conventions, entrance is by invitation only, and a purchase of tickets for the evening show at The Congress Theatre is essential. "

Chris and Sheila wrote :-
'The Hollies have agreed a new CD deal with EMI, with a new album scheduled for release in February 2006. Top writers including Rob Davis have been busy penning new songs. Last week, we were privileged, courtesy of Jimmy Smith, to have attended a meeting where we listened to five of the new songs that are scheduled for inclusion on the CD, plus a couple of others in their early mixes. We liked what we heard, and if these songs are just the beginning of future plans then February 2006 can't come soon enough!'

3rd December 2004. Peter Howarth appeared live on today's 'Des and Mel' afternoon TV show. He was one of the backing singers on Cliff Richard's performance of his latest record release. Des O'Connor predicts it to be the Christmas No.1.
There's a rumour coming down the entertainment trail that, in Nashville, there is a tribute album to the Hollies that some major country music singers would be participating. I don't know if this is going to happen, but there is talk that Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Tracy Byrd, Reba McEntire and others would be doing interpretations of Hollies hits and album tracks, including "Jennifer Eccles", "Long Cool Woman" and "Do The Best You Can."

I am deeply shocked at the announcement that
following a long illness,
Carl Wayne passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, 31st August 2004. My
thoughts go with his family, friends and fans.
Carl had recently been diagnosed with cancer
of the oesophagus, the illness had not interfered with his session recording
or concert tours with The Hollies, whom he joined in 2000. During the
group’s European shows in July, Carl was his usual enthusiastic and
energetic self, dominating the stage and dazzling the audience with his
superb performance and vocal skills. A few weeks after his last concert with
the band, Carl went into hospital for a routine check up. Without warning,
his condition suddenly deteriorated and within a few short days, with his
family at his bedside, Carl died.
The 1983 Hollies live album will be reissued on Sept. 28th.
And the Percy Sledge album w/ Lonely Hobo Lullabye and 3 Rickfors songs is

A new book about The Hollies written in Spanish by Fernando López Chaurri
'Three years ago I began to write a book about The Hollies and now the book is finished and on sale….only in a Spanish version. I have always thought that The Hollies have been between the three mains English groups of the sixties and so one of the most important groups of all the pop and rock history. But they haven’t had the consideration they deserve. The general knowledge about the story of The Hollies is not very wide so I thought it would be a good idea to write it. The book is mainly about the sixties period. I think they were really great and influential when Graham Nash was in the group.'

I emailed Radio 2's
Sounds of The Sixties to ask them to play a
Hollies track and mention the Hall Of Fame petition. This is the
reply from the producer. So keep listening !
Graham,
Thanks for your email. I'll happily support your
campaign in fact I'm amazed they haven't been honoured already !
Allan Clarke and I were good mates in the seventies playing darts
and drinking together along with friends like Ronnie Beck who
discovered Queen and Deep Purple to name but two !!! plus Les Grey
from Mud and a top promotions man at the time Steve Collier who was
responsible for David Essex and a bag full of other top artists from
the 60's..
Too young to know them myself in the 60's but I'm blessed with 60's
and 70's shows on Radio 2 and can honour their talents subsequently.
I'll ask Brian Matthew to voice your project as I will with Steve
Harley (presenter of SOT70's), along with a disc.
I know Allan is looking after his wife these days but along with the
Beatles, Stones, Kinks.... they were icons of the 60's and had
possibly the best harmonies of all, in my opinion.
Good luck.
Roger Bowman.

Carl Wayne has teamed up with Ulli Eichblatt and German pop project Et Cetera to record the much-loved "Soldier's Song"as a single.
Of the project Ulli
said "I
recorded several songs with Carl, but 'Soldier's Song' is now pressed as a
CD-Single.
It is Et Cetera with Carl Wayne - but don't worry too much, no dance sounds
as I did with Allan Clarke but quite close to the original. We mainly
used film sounds and strings - so it sounds really great on Dolby Surround."
Ulli also speaks of his association with
Allan Clarke, "Allan
Clarke has retired from The Hollies but not from the music scene. We have
just published a a megamix titled "Hollies' Rocks" for a special
compilation. It includes a 6 minutes:45 seconds mix of "Hey Willy" / The Day
That Curly Billy Shot Down Crazy Sam McGee" and "Long Cool Woman". Though
"faithful" Hollies' fans may not like the current dance-sounds, the
compilation is selling well and Allan is happy to be still part of the
actual music business."

The Hollies' 2002 Autumn tour was postponed
The
Hollies announced the postponement of their 2002 Autumn Tour due to
lead singer Carl Wayne having to undergo an urgent operation to remove an
oesophageal blockage. Discovered recently, the blockage has prevented Carl
from eating properly and doctors have advised operating without delay:
It looks now that the Bournemouth Convention and the evening concert at the Pavilion Theatre will now be held on 6th April 2003, as the dates have been rescheduled.

Can You Please Help
Manfred needs a very good scan (not less than 300
dpi and not smaller than 50
percent) of the Hollies single:
(Ain't That) Just Like Me/Hey, What's Wrong With Me (Parlophone 5030) 1963
The record has no picture sleeve, but a sleeve of Parlophone and the label
of the single must
be seen in the middle.

I'd just like to say, about The Book 'Write
On'. I received my copy in early December 2001, and I am pleased with what
I got. The book is hard backed, A4 size, 158 pages in all. It has a detail
short biography of The Hollies, with some interesting facts, with the
pages half in German and the other in English. Also photos of the group,
mainly the Rickfors era. The bulk of the book is then taken up by full
discography of The Hollies, Graham Nash, Allan Clarke, Mikael Rickfors,
Terry Sylvester, Carl Wayne, Tony Hicks, Ian Parker, Alan Coates, Ray
Stiles and even Eric Haydock. Photos showing the albums and singles
covers. I even found out about 2 Allan Clarke albums I never knew existed.
In all a very good book for anyone wanting to know more about The Hollies.
Staunch fans will probably know about most of what is in the book, but new
fans will find it very interesting.

The book was self published in 2000 by Australian Chris Farrell, he started collecting the information in the early 80s. It is just The Hollies songs. It starts with their first recording (Aint That) Just Like Me in 1963 and ends with Peggy Sue Got Married in 1996. It tells where and when each song was recorded, written by, who does vocals and all instruments. Also which variations of the song and additions. Also which single, LP and CD the song is on.
